Short Film Competition & Masterclasses at Camberley Theatre

Calling all film and animation people!

Thanks very much to all who have entered the CIF short film / animation competition! The deadline for entries has now passed. Long lists and short lists will be announced soon. We had over 180 International entries and 100 UK entries!

The Awards Ceremony will take place at Camberley Theatre on 21st June 2018. All are very welcome to attend. Prizes will be presented by the BAFTA Award winning actress Juliet Aubrey.

The awards will go to:

Best International Entry medal

Best U.K. Entry medal

Tri-County Winner £100 plus Winner’s trophy

2 x Tri-County Runners Up  £50 each plus a runner’s up medal.

(Tri-County means Surrey / Hampshire / Berkshire)

To start things off on the evening of Thursday 21st June from 6pm, we will be hosting free to attend masterclasses and panel discussions with industry experts. These are perfect for anyone considering a future in creative media / animation or film making. Even if you are just curious to see how animations and films are made, please feel free to come along. See below for more details.

We will also be live streaming the panel discussion – tune in via our Facebook page from 19:00 GMT on June 21st and ask any of our guests any questions you might have about ‘How To Get Started and What’s Hot Within The Industry Right Now?’

At 8pm everyone is invited to attend the ten shortlisted Tri- County competition entries plus the Best UK and the Best International entries. These will be shown in the main auditorium. The Tri-County award winners will then be announced and presented with their trophies by BAFTA Award winning actress and C.I.F. patron, Juliet Aubrey. The theatre bar will be open all evening, so please come along and have a fantastic film filled night! There will also be drinks in the bar after the awards have taken place with plenty of networking opportunities.

Masterclasses & Panel Discussion Details

6 – 7pm Masterclass with Gavin Irvine

Gavin is a multi-award winning Northern Irish writer/director based in London.

In 2018 he won the Special Jury Award at the Canada Independent Film Festival, Montreal, for his surreal comedy, 2:40 to London, which also won him Best Director and Best Short at the Portugal International Film Festival in 2017 (both Filmfreeway top 100 festivals), and a further 3 nominations – Best Score, Best Comedy and Best Short – at various other film festivals.

Gavin’s masterclass will be focussing on the process of making a short film; from script to screen and how to promote it afterwards – touching on all aspects of the process – writing, directing, producing, editing, music. Gavin will also point out the pitfalls and the things that must be put in place for the project to be a success. There will be a Q&A session with Gavin afterwards.

6 – 7pm Masterclass with Joseph Wallace

Joseph Wallace is a BAFTA Cyrmu nominated animation and puppetry director. He is currently working on a new animated short, produced by Delaval Film, which received a development residency at the Open Workshop in Denmark and won the 2017 Visegrad Animation Forum pitching prize in Czech Republic. His latest music video for the American band Sparks trended on both Youtube and Vimeo, was featured on countless websites and blogs, being described as ”sublime” by French site Allociné and was nominated for a Kinsale Shark Award and long listed for the 1.4 Awards. Extracts were also played on BBC’s Newsnight and the One Show and the video featured on the Guardian online. In 2015 he curated the film programme for the Bristol Festival of Puppetry and was made a BBC Performing Arts Fellow.

Joeseph’s masterclass will feature creating cinematic animated films from humble materials. Visual storytelling and dynamic animated aesthetics. Taking designs from two to three dimensions. Practical behind the scenes insight into how he approaches his  films and what kind of materials and methodologies he employs.

7 – 8pm Andy Wyatt ToonBoom demonstration and Q&A

Andy is a Director of Animation Associates and is the UK and Ireland’s Toon Boom ambassador, and is the first point of contact for anyone who wants to know anything about Toon Boom animation software, and how it can be used by a studio, a freelancer, a university or a student.

As an animator himself, Andy knows about the creative and production requirements of any potential or existing Toon Boom users.

ToonBoom Harmony is cutting edge software, offering an amazing variety of tools that throw open the doors to a totally new experience in the field of 2D animation which is among the most widely used by professionals the world over. Studios and artists are drawn towards Harmony by its versatility and power to create animation in any style or technique. This  presentation will explore some of these techniques as well as examples from recent animation produced using ToonBoon tools.

Rob is VP Production for Cake Entertainment and has 25 years experience in the children’s television and animation industry. He has worked in every format of animation and in many countries around the world, as well as on both sides of the production/broadcast divide; working for ITV, Aardman, Disney, M2 Films, Endemol, Initial Productions, TVC Cartoons, Grand Slamm Children’s Films, Kindle Entertainment, Nexus Productions, Larkshead Media and now Cake Entertainment as VP Production.

He also started and runs festivus, an animation social and networking event that has been going for over 12 years, and regularly sits on advisory boards and panels.

Emma Calder

Emma

Emma was born in London. She studied Graphic design at The Royal College of Art. She has worked as an Animation Director, Artist, Graphic Designer and Lecturer and has written, designed and illustrated books, for both adults and children. She co-founded Pearly Oyster Productions making many successful and award winning aniumated films, including The Queens Monastery (BBC). She is currently working on her first feature length animation.

Emma lives in London with her partner and two children

Jason Glenister

Jason has over 25yrs experience in all aspects of the film & TV, writing, advertising and the creative industries.

He began his career writing & directing music videos and documentaries. From music videos, he moved into writing and directing TV commercials and more recently into digital content creation.

He’s currently Creative Director and founding member of new digital Innovation agency Unicorn XP. He describes this role as helping ‘humanise’ the digital world.

His combination of film, scriptwriting, commercial and digital experience – learnt over 25 years – has naturally led Jason to delivering rich narrative-based content and campaign ideas.

Harriet Titlow

Harriet graduated from Middlesex University BA Animation in 2014 and went on to work as a Character Design Assistant on ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ children’s television series. She now works at Middlesex University as a Graduate Academic Assistant, helping students progress and learn new techniques and assisting lectures in their teaching. She also works on her own personal freelance practice, on music video projects and illustration.
